While there are some mediation professionals making a fair living at mediation, generally the compensation is minimal to non-existent. Many mediators are volunteers and some communities are often required to use volunteers before paid mediators. However, mediation training is an excellent addition to a resume especially for human resource professionals, attorneys and anyone else who needs the skills to mediate conflict within a business or with its customers. Community leaders can use the skills to resolve issues among conflicting public service groups or with its constituents. Some just want to improve their communication skills.
Mediators must complete a 40-hour Basic Training course which fulfills the standards for content established by the Texas Mediation Trainers Roundtable (TMTR). An additional 30-hour Family Mediation Training must be completed in order to assist families with internal issues or through a divorce. There are additional courses available such as Ethics Training and some customized courses as needed.
Bastrop County Dispute Resolution Services offers both the 40-Hour Basic Mediation Course and the Family Mediation Course. Plans are being made to offer the Basic 40-Hour Mediation Course in the fall of 2010. Contact us to be put on a list to be notified with the details when they have been determined. If you don't mind traveling, courses are offered through community ADR centers and colleges throughout Texas. Check the links page to find these courses. Course costs vary widely by several hundred dollars so it might be wise to shop around and compare the costs, including travel, eating out and staying overnight, to prices offered closer to home. Some are 5-day courses others are only 3 days with extended hours.
40-HOUR BASIC MEDIATION TRAINING
The 40-Hour Basic Mediation Course provides individuals with the skills and credentials they need to serve as a mediator in the State of Texas. The training covers history, theory and processes of mediation as well as self-awarenesss, ethics and communication. Students participate in practice mediations and receive feedback. For an overview of the course, see the TMTR standards for the Basic Mediation course.
FAMILY MEDIATION TRAINING
The 30-hour Family Mediation Course fulfills the Texas ADR Act requirements for mediators doing court-ordered family mediation. The course covers family law, family dynamics, domestic violence, child development and ethics through lecture and role playing. The 40-hour Basic Mediation Training is a prerequisite for this course. For an overview of the course, see the TMTR standards for the Family Mediation Course.
